Indexability
A page is indexable when nothing technically prevents Google from adding it to the index: it returns 200, has no noindex, isn't blocked in robots.txt and its canonical points to itself. Indexability is necessary but not sufficient — whether the page actually gets indexed also depends on Google's assessment of the content.
Five conditions for indexability
- A 200 status code — not 404, not 5xx, not a redirect (HTTP status codes).
- No noindex — neither in meta robots nor in the X-Robots-Tag header.
- No robots.txt block — Googlebot must be able to fetch the page (robots.txt).
- A self-referencing canonical — or none; a canonical to another URL hands indexing over to that page.
- Content accessible to the crawler — not only after login, not only after a click, not empty after rendering.
Indexable vs indexed
| Indexable | Indexed | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | your site configuration | |
| What's checked | status, noindex, robots.txt, canonical | also content quality and uniqueness |
| How to check | SEO tools, monitoring | Google Search Console |
How to check
- status code, canonical and noindex — the redirect checker shows them for the final page,
- robots.txt blocks — the robots.txt checker points to the rule,
- actual indexing — URL Inspection in Search Console.
Monitoring indexability
IndexRise checks all the conditions for monitored pages every night. When a page stops being indexable, you get one critical event with the cause: noindex, a canonical pointing elsewhere or a robots.txt rule. The dashboard also shows how many monitored pages are indexable and why the rest aren't.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between indexable and indexed?
Indexable — the page can enter the index because nothing technically blocks it. Indexed — Google actually added it. An indexable page can still be unindexed, for example as “crawled – currently not indexed”.
How do I check whether a page is indexed?
Most reliably in Google Search Console, with URL Inspection. A site: search gives only a rough picture.
What most often makes pages non-indexable?
An accidental noindex from staging, a canonical pointing to another page after a template change, a new Disallow rule in robots.txt and server errors.
